The Griz Get Trapped by the Eagles

Eagles Avenge Loss

The battle for second place in the Southern League is on. Technically the TC Eagles still can win the Southern League championship. This is all that needs to happen; LeGrand losses 4 of its last 6 games, 1 to TC, 2 to Mariposa, and 1 to one of the other teams in the league, while TC wins out. That means the Eagles go 6-0 for the rest of league play while LeGrand has the biggest deflation of all time. That could happen but is not likely. What is likely is that TC only losses to LeGrand in its last 6 games or shocks the Bulldogs when they play for the 3rd time and ends league play with an 11-4 or 12-3 record and 2nd place. The informal and unofficial parent poll, mostly dads (really just dads and a grandpa) predicted a 3rd place finish in league. I am hoping we are proven wrong. For more information on that pre-season poll see the stats and tire guys.

Turlock Christian traveled to Mariposa on Thursday night where the team's goal was to avenge a 40-44 overtime lose the last time they met. That goal was met as TC won 53-31. Mariposa entered the game in second place with 6 wins and 1 loss and the Eagles were in third place with 4 wins and 3 losses. The Eagles are still in 3rd place, but now only 1 game from 2nd. The Lady Eagles came out in man to man, which must have surprised the Grizzles since TC had pressed and used a zone defense in the first meeting, and proceeded to fly to a 12-6 first quarter lead. Excellent interior defense by Kaisa Spycher and Molly Zuhlke frustrated the Mariposa "big" girls. These two combined for 7 blocked shots, most of them on the Mariposa's centers. For the first half the defense of the red, white, and blue Eagles frustrated the Grizzles who ended the game with 31 turnovers. When the second half began Mariposa came out as if they might catch TC sleeping. It appeared that Coach Brondolo's halftime talk had motivated the Lady Grizzles and they looked liked they wanted the game more than the Eagles as they pulled within 3 points midway through the 3rd quarter. Led by Kaisa Spycher's 14 points and 21 rebounds against the tall Mariposa team the girls withstood the run and turned up the offense for the rest of the game. TC ended up scoring 34 points in the second half which ended Mariposa's comeback.

Outstanding Performances Included:

Points: Erin Santiago (15, including 3 3s), Kaisa Spycher (14) and Candice Balswick (8).
Rebounds: Kaisa (21, the most for any player this season), Marly Burton and Erin (6).
Steals: Erin (5), Emily Breuss, Kara Gabrielson, and Molly Farrar (3 each).
Assists: Candice Balswick and Molly F (4 each).
Blocked Shots: Molly Zuhlke (4) and Kaisa (3).

Way to go Lady Eagles.

Eaglets Fight Their Way Back

The Eaglets went into halftime behind for the 1st time in 7 previous Southern League games down 1 point to the Mariposa JV Cubs. Mariposa wasted no time as they came out in the 3rd quarter and extended their lead to 5 points. As the fourth quarter proceeded it looked as if the Cubs might pull off the upset. The JV Eaglets could not be denied and continued their winning ways as they shocked the Lady Cubs 31-30 on a last second shot by Natalie S. Way to go "Baby Birds":-)

Don't miss Thursday games vs. Denair at Calvary Baptist. JV @ 6 and the Varsity @ 7:30.
