Some Comparisons: MaxPrep Surfin' by the Zulkster

Have you looked at the MaxPrep website lately. For a former basketball coach and math teacher it is like going to "statistics heaven"

Here are some little known facts;

1) The leading scorer in the section scored some of those points against our Lady Eagles and is pictured in the slide show at the right of this entry - Cheyenne Williams of Bradshaw Christian at 22.6 ppg. She only scored 15 against TC:-)

2) Candice Balswick is 13th in the entire state of California in drawing charges.

3) Kaisa Spycher is 26th in blocked shots among all sophomores in California with 2.3 blocks per game.

4) Molly Zuhlke is 39th in blocked shots among all sophomores in California with 1.7 blocks per game.

5) TC's 51.8 rebounds per game is 24 rebounds over the national average.

6) The Eagles steal at a rate that is 7 above the national average with 17+ steals per game.

7) TC is 4th in blocks in the Sac-Joaquin Section and 19th in California with an average of 7.3 blocks a game

8) The Lady Eagles are 6th in the section in steals with 17.5 a game.

9) REBOUNDS are the BIG KAHUNA at TC.
• 51.8 rebounds per game puts the Eagles at the top of team rebounds in the Sac-Joaquin Section by almost 10 rebounds per game.
• The girls are 2nd in rebounds in all of California. Only 9 rebounds separate TC with Gilroy High School. Let's see a little more effort girls.
• The Eagles are the top offensive rebounding team in California.

I don't know if anyone really cares about these stats, but I know I love them:-)

The Griz Get Trapped by the Eagles

Eagles Avenge Loss

The battle for second place in the Southern League is on. Technically the TC Eagles still can win the Southern League championship. This is all that needs to happen; LeGrand losses 4 of its last 6 games, 1 to TC, 2 to Mariposa, and 1 to one of the other teams in the league, while TC wins out. That means the Eagles go 6-0 for the rest of league play while LeGrand has the biggest deflation of all time. That could happen but is not likely. What is likely is that TC only losses to LeGrand in its last 6 games or shocks the Bulldogs when they play for the 3rd time and ends league play with an 11-4 or 12-3 record and 2nd place. The informal and unofficial parent poll, mostly dads (really just dads and a grandpa) predicted a 3rd place finish in league. I am hoping we are proven wrong. For more information on that pre-season poll see the stats and tire guys.

Turlock Christian traveled to Mariposa on Thursday night where the team's goal was to avenge a 40-44 overtime lose the last time they met. That goal was met as TC won 53-31. Mariposa entered the game in second place with 6 wins and 1 loss and the Eagles were in third place with 4 wins and 3 losses. The Eagles are still in 3rd place, but now only 1 game from 2nd. The Lady Eagles came out in man to man, which must have surprised the Grizzles since TC had pressed and used a zone defense in the first meeting, and proceeded to fly to a 12-6 first quarter lead. Excellent interior defense by Kaisa Spycher and Molly Zuhlke frustrated the Mariposa "big" girls. These two combined for 7 blocked shots, most of them on the Mariposa's centers. For the first half the defense of the red, white, and blue Eagles frustrated the Grizzles who ended the game with 31 turnovers. When the second half began Mariposa came out as if they might catch TC sleeping. It appeared that Coach Brondolo's halftime talk had motivated the Lady Grizzles and they looked liked they wanted the game more than the Eagles as they pulled within 3 points midway through the 3rd quarter. Led by Kaisa Spycher's 14 points and 21 rebounds against the tall Mariposa team the girls withstood the run and turned up the offense for the rest of the game. TC ended up scoring 34 points in the second half which ended Mariposa's comeback.

Outstanding Performances Included:

Points: Erin Santiago (15, including 3 3s), Kaisa Spycher (14) and Candice Balswick (8).
Rebounds: Kaisa (21, the most for any player this season), Marly Burton and Erin (6).
Steals: Erin (5), Emily Breuss, Kara Gabrielson, and Molly Farrar (3 each).
Assists: Candice Balswick and Molly F (4 each).
Blocked Shots: Molly Zuhlke (4) and Kaisa (3).

Way to go Lady Eagles.

Eaglets Fight Their Way Back

The Eaglets went into halftime behind for the 1st time in 7 previous Southern League games down 1 point to the Mariposa JV Cubs. Mariposa wasted no time as they came out in the 3rd quarter and extended their lead to 5 points. As the fourth quarter proceeded it looked as if the Cubs might pull off the upset. The JV Eaglets could not be denied and continued their winning ways as they shocked the Lady Cubs 31-30 on a last second shot by Natalie S. Way to go "Baby Birds":-)

Eagles Win Homecoming Game vs Delhi

Eaglets win against Delhi

The JV Eaglets beat Delhi handily, ahead 28-0 by the time Delhi scored its first points. The JV team has improved to 7 wins and 0 losses in the Southern League. Way to go "Baby" Eagles:-)

Varsity Wins Homecoming Game

The Lady Eagles bounced back from the LeGrand game with an impressive 52-23 win over Delhi at Friday's homecoming game, behind the excellent effort of Princess Amy Wright's 9 points and 6 rebounds. The Eagles dominated the game, pulling down 56 rebounds and dishing out 16 assists.

Outstanding Individual Performances included;

Points: Erin Santiago (11), Kaisa Spycher (11) and Amy Wright (9)
Steals: Molly Farrar (3)
Assists: Candice Balswick (5), Molly F, Kara Gabrielson (3) and Tiffany Snyder (2)
Blocks: Kaisa (4), Molly Zuhlke and Erin (2 each)
Rebounds: Aubrey Larsen (10) and Kaisa (9)

Eagles Shot Down by Bulldogs

The TC Lady Eagles traveled to LeGrand and were handed a 31-72 loss. The Bulldogs threw a press at the Eagles for the entire game and the Eagles could not solve it. The press forced TC into committing 33 turnovers and a load of points for the Bulldogs. TC countered with a press of its own but LeGrand used an excellent press break to score at will. Four of LeGrand's starters scored in double figures and the fifth player scored 8 points.

It was a long rough night for the Eagles. Despite the loss the Eagles are currently in 3rd place in the Southern League with a chance of fighting their way up to 2nd place if they beat the teams below them and pull off a few victories against Mariposa.

Wildcats Routed by Eagles

The Lady Eagles routed the Waterford Wildcats 77-11 on Thursday, January 15th. TC came out on fire and were leading 20-2 by the end of the first quarter. Dominating the boards and stealing the ball at will the Eagles extended their lead to 45 to 9 by halftime. Some in the crowd began to whisper about the possibility of 100 points. Since Waterford was able to score, at least a few points, there would not have been the Covenant Christian vs Dallas Christian Academy debacle. Coach Edwin, the classy guy that he is, would never be mean spirited and run up a score, so he showed mercy to the Wildcats by not pressing and giving everyone on the team plenty of playing time during the second half. The team's defense was awesome during the second half holding Waterford to 2 points. Great job girls.

Outstanding Performances included:

Scoring: Erin Santiago (17), Amy Wright (14)
Rebounds: Amy (11), Molly Zuhlke (10)
Steals: Candice Balswick (5), Kara Gabrielson (3)
Assists: Cancice and Erin (4)
Blocked Shots: Molly Zuhlke (2)

Coyotes Fall to the Varsity and JV Eagles

(Click here to see the Turlock Journal article about the game)

The JV Eagles Fly by Coyotes

The JV continued it juggernaut through the Southern League with an impressive win over the Denair Coyotes on Monday night. Using a relentless press the Eagles turned a close halftime game into a wrought. Excellent defense led to a multitude of fast breaks and lay-ups. Outstanding performances were had by Natalie S., Ashley B., Paige U., Tara, Mary and many others. The Eaglets improved to 4 wins and 0 losses in the Southern League. Way to go JV.

Eagles Soar to Victory Over Denair

Deniar vs TC 001
Marly & Molly (M & M)
"Do not come into our house"

The Lady Eagles improved to 2 and 2 in the Southern League with an impressive 62-32 win over Denair. The team continues to play outstanding defence resulting in 26 steals, 28 defensive rebounds and 6 blocked shots. The offense dominated the backboards with 32 rebounds and scored the third most points of the season. The team's shooting percentage was vastly improved over the last 6 games.

After a close 1st quarter, 17-11, Denair did not score double figures in any of the remaining periods. The depth of the Eagles was to much for Denair. The team came out at halftime in a full court press that the Coyotes could not handle. In one stretch, in the second half, the Eagles hit three consecutive 3 pointers in just a few seconds taking the bite out of the Coyotes.

Stellar defensive performances included:

Blocks: Kara Gabrielson and Molly Zuhlke (2)
Steals: Erin Santiago (6), Tiffany Synder (5), Molly Farrar (5), and Kara G (3)
Defensive Rebounds: Marly Burton (7), Kaisa Spycher (5) and Molly Z (4)

Superb offensive performances included:

Points: Erin (14), Amy Wright (9), Marly (8), and Kara (8)
Offensive Rebounds: Aubrey Larson, Emily Breuss, and Marly (6 each)
Assists: Erin and Kara (3 each)

Great game girls.

Come out and cheer the team on against Waterford at Calvary Baptist on Thursday. JV starts at 6PM and Varsity at 7:30. See you there.

Eagles Split With Mariposa

JV Eaglettes in 1st place in Southern League.

The JV continued its run in the Southern League with an exciting victory against Mariposa on Thursday night. With outstanding preformaces by Paige U., Rebeka M., and Natalie S. they won their 3rd contest in league. Using the press as both an offensive and defensive weapon they out ran the Grizzles. Great Job JVers:-)

Varsity Eagles fall to Mariposa.

The Lady Eagles had a disappointing 40-44 loss to the Mariposa Grizzles on Thursday night. The pressing Eagles were plagued by foul trouble throughout the contest and eventually Candice Balswick and Amy Grant fouled out. TC moved away from the platooning system, that has worked so well throughout the pre-season and the first few league games, for this contest. The "second" team only entered the contest once for just under 2 minutes in the first quarter and were never seen again, as a unit, for the rest of the game. The girls appeared to run out of gas by the overtime period and were out scored 4-0. After a lot of success with the press during the first half the Grizzles began to score on a number of fast breaks during the second half. The girls continued to show that defense is a very strong part of the Eagles game.

Outstanding performance included:

Points: Molly Farrar (16), Amy Wright (9), and Erin Santiago (8)
Assists: Erin (3) and Molly F (2)
Steals: Molly F (9 which is tops this year), Amy (7) and Tiffany Snyder (4)
Blocks: Kaisa Spycher (8, which is also the best of the year), and Molly F (4)
Rebounds: Kaisa (19 - Best of the year), and Amy (15)

Some excellent individual efforts and the team never gave up. Way to work hard girls.

JV & Varsity Sweep Delhi

JV downs the Hawks:

The TC Lady Eaglets began the night at Delhi with an impressive win. The score was football like at half-time, TC with 3 field goals and Delhi with a touchdown and extra point (for those with limited football knowledge that is a 9 to 7 score). Coach Wright came out in the second half with the full court press and the girls pounded the Hawks. This observer noticed some excellent play by Natalie at the point, Paige stealing and rebounding all over the place, Ashley blocking shots, Alana hitting the jumpers, and the team looking great in the second half. Great job JV:-)

Lady Eagles beat the Delhi Hawks

The TC varsity improved their record to 10 wins and 4 losses as they beat the Hawks at the Delhi gymnasium 53 - 15. The game was never out of doubt as the multi-talented Eagles overwhelmed their opponent. Delhi did not know what to do as the Eagles came after them wave after wave. The TC defense continued to shine, holding Delhi to its lowest score of the year.

Defensive standouts included:

Defensive Rebounds; Kaisa Spycher (6), Erin Santiago (6), Marly Burton (5) and Molly Zuhlke (4)
Steals: Molly Farrar (4), Emily Bruss or Emily Brusf in the Modesto Bee (4), Kara Gabrielson (3), Candice Balswick (3), and Erin (3)
Blocks: Kaisa with a season high 7 and Marly (5)

Other outstanding performances included:

Points: Candice (9) and Kaisa (9) and 10 of the players scoring.
Offensive Rebounds: Emily (5), Kaisa (4) and Kara (4)
Assists: Molly F (5)

Great game Eagles.
